A Slice of Mango – IoC and Unit Test

clock August 29, 2011 20:50 by author dkelley

The Mango feast continues at the Seattle Silverlight User Group on Sept 7th as we build on the previous Mango presentations. This month, Microsoft patterns & practices team members Francis Cheung and Karl Shifflett will serve up a slice of Mango covering Windows Phone 7 Unit Testing and using an inversion of control container (IoC). This event will be held at the normal time (7:00pm) on 7 Sept 2011:

Abstract:

Unit Testing: Learn how to: unit test Windows Phone 7 applications, write testable code, and run unit tests are part of the build. This session will motivate and teach you to unit test your Windows Phone 7 applications. Think about this, it takes 3-5 days for an update of your application to post to the market place; much better to discover issues before you deploy.

IoC: Learn how to: create Blendable Windows Phone 7 applications who’s view model dependencies are injected into the constructor rather than the view model creating its own dependencies. Dependency injection increases testability of your applications and provides a good design time experience for developers and designers alike. This session will provide you a clear understanding of the benefits and implementation pattern for using dependency injection in your Windows Phone 7 applications.

Book Review: Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Enterprise Applications on Windows Phone 7

clock August 15, 2011 07:16 by author dkelley

One of the most important developer space's on the Microsoft stack is the still emerging LOB app space for phone 7. This particular book is focused on SharePoint 2010 applications on Phone 7 which is an increasingly important sector of the increasingly important Phone 7 developer segment... yes I know a bit repetitive but still...

The thing in this book that really made it for me a "must have" for LOB wp7 folks is the fact that it separates the basic's skills need on each related platform (wp7 and sharepoint) and then includes the cross over elements of working with both platforms as well. Although narrowly focused this as I pointed out an increasingly important segment that this book is targeted towards and as an LOB developer sometimes myself its an important part of my collection.

The downside of this book would be the lack of depth for phone 7 and sharepoint specific information but that really is beyond the scope of the premise of the book so I can't fault that on the book but that also means that to make the most of this particular book you should probably look into something on sharepoint and another book on windows phone7.

A Slice of Mango - LOB

clock July 27, 2011 18:50 by author dkelley

The Mango feast continues at the Seattle Silverlight User Group on Aug 3rd as we build on the previous presentation “Mango Dinner,” presented by Microsoft MVP Alex Golesh. This month, Karl Shifflett (Microsoft patterns & practices team) will serve up a slice of Mango covering data entry forms on the Windows Phone 7. This event will be held at the normal time (7:00pm) on 3 Aug 2011:

Abstract:  Windows Phone codenamed "Mango" is Microsoft's newest version of mobile phone. This deep-dive session focuses on a single slice of Mango, the data entry form. Mango has the enhanced data binding stack from Silverlight 4, along with ICommands, IDataErrorInfo to simplify form code and reduce the number of binding converters in applications. It would be unnatural to talk about data forms without a serving of MVVM (Model-View-ViewModel) to provide separation of concerns and enabling easier unit testing of the application. In addition, this slice of Mango will cover other techniques that developers can employ to make their forms easier for end-users to fill in on the device.

Bonus:  The patterns & practices Windows Phone 7 Guidance team will talk about their new phone project for 15 minutes. Attendees will learn about the project (so they can follow and feed into it) and be able to provide their input as well on needed guidance for building Windows Phone 7 applications. We are very interested in your real-world problems and scenarios that you need guidance on.

Date and Time: August 3rd, 7pm 2011

Location: Microsoft Maincampus Redmond, WA Building 40/41 caff ( http://www.bing.com/maps/?v=2&where1=Microsoft%20Building%2041%2C%20WA&encType=1  ) at 7pm to 9pm

Targeted Your WP7 App and Making Money with Windows Phone 7

clock March 29, 2011 20:43 by author dkelley

This month's (April 6th) meeting is about making money with phone 7.  We have 2 presentations, with the first hour on making money with AdCenter from AdCenter team member Boris Feldmen and our second presentation by world renown MVP Walt Ritscher on 'After the development is over:  Selling and analyzing your Windows Phone 7 application'.

Boris Feldmans presentation covers: Giving mobile developers options for how to turn their hard work into cold-hard cash is the key to building a thriving Windows Phone ecosystem. This session by Boris Feldman (Microsoft Advertising) will start helping developers put on their business hats by covering the basics of mobile advertising. We'll also show the end-to-end advertising workflow by demonstrating, with live working code, how easy it is to go from File/New to a fully-functional Windows Phone 7 ad-supported app.

Walt Ritscher's presentation is titled: 'After the development is over:  Selling and analyzing your Windows Phone 7 application'

abstract: I've talked to a lot of developers who are creating Windows Phone 7 applications.  Some do it because they love the platform and have a strong vision of what they want for their mobile applications.  Others see the WP7 landscape as a green field opportunity and hope to cash in on the exciting new device. But what happens after you written your last line of code and are ready to market your application?
You have to set a price for your application and get it on the marketplace.   So can you make money as a Windows Phone 7 developer?
The answer is yes, but you have to know what you are doing.  Since the AdCenter team is sharing the stage during this event  this talk will concentrate on 3rd party ad frameworks like AdMob. This talks shows you the various ways to sell your app, including tips on pricing, whether to create trial versions or make free ad supported applications.  Lots of real world stories and sales numbers during the evening.
As an added bonus, learn how to instrument your code so you can see what features your users love and what features they avoid and the reason analytics are important to improving your application.

Date and Time: April 6th, 2011 7pm
Location: Microsoft Maincampus Redmond, WA Building 40/41 caff ( bing maps ) at 6:30pm to 9:00pm.

All the local Microsoftee's and MVP's will be there.

Meet and greet MVPs and Microsoftee’s, hange out will all the local Silverlight experts
